Twitter Is Worst At Protecting LGBTQ Plus Community From Hate Speech And Harassment GLAAD Report

Safety Index Report: GLAAD has released the Annual Social Media Safety Index Report for all major social platforms. Actually, GLAAD is an advocacy group for the LGBTQ+ community. Every year GLAAD releases Annual Report. In this report, this time it has come to the fore that Twitter is the weakest among all other popular social media apps in protecting the LGBTQ plus community from hate speech. This platform is not particularly appropriate for those who identify as transgender, non-binary or gender non-conforming.

Last year Twitter’s score was 45% in terms of safety, which has increased to 33% this year. In fact, after Twitter was bought by Elon Musk, he fired the company’s communication staff, after which it automatically sent a Poop emoji when the press office was contacted. The advocacy group also pointed out that after Elon Musk bought Twitter, hate speech on the LGBTQ+ community has increased because the company no longer has as many people monitoring it. Also, Musk’s free speech rule has further promoted the issue of hate speech, explicit content and harassment on Twitter.

In April, Twitter ended a policy that prohibited misgendering or deadnaming targeted transgender people on the platform. After this, the safety of the LGBTQ+ community on Twitter has further reduced.

There is no transparency – report

The report further states that Twitter has failed to provide adequate transparency in other key areas. The company currently does not have any such facility that gives users the option to announce gender on their profile. Apart from this, the company does not even give this option to the people so that they can limit the data collection of Twitter. The report further stated that Twitter also does not disclose whether it has an LGBTQ policy lead who addresses the needs of LGBTQ users. Or does it have formal training that educates all employees on the needs of LGBTQ users.
